Remarkable publicity photograph for ill-fated McKinley-Roosevelt campaign

Theodore Roosevelt; and William McKinley

Large Photograph Signed by both,

full-length double portrait by Pach Brothers, photomontage showing them seated in a leafy garden. Signed in the image at lower edge, each near the relevant portrait. 11½x15¾ inches; mounted to larger board, slight vertical crease running between two portraits (causing cracking but without loss to emulsion), restoration to tear at upper right corner, signatures bold; matted in a heavy wooden frame.

Np, circa 1900.

  • Notes: In 1900, the photograph in this lot was created to promote McKinley's presidential re-election campaign that year, featuring the likeness of Governor Theodore Roosevelt, whom the Republican National Convention had selected as candidate for vice president. McKinley won the election, only to be assassinated six months later, but McKinley's bad luck had begun before the Convention, when the RNC's first choice for running mate, McKinley's incumbent vice president Garret Hobart, died in November 1899. The photograph which the Pach Brothers created in 1899 for the first re-election campaign ticket of McKinley-Hobart showed McKinley and Hobart seated in a leafy garden; when Hobart died, the Pach Brothers modified this first photograph by artfully pasting a photograph of Roosevelt in place of Hobart and photographing the result, the negative of which was used to create the present print.
