Signed aboard ship on day before returning home after his African expedition

Theodore Roosevelt

Photograph dated and Signed,

group portrait showing him on the bridge of the SS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria with the ship's captain and crew, [likely during the return trip to New York after the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African expedition]. Signed in the image along lower edge. 5x7 inches; slight silvering in dark areas, imperfect exposure at points along extreme left edge, remnants of hinging at upper corners verso.

Np, 17 June 1910.

  • Notes: Between 1909 and 1910, Roosevelt embarked upon an expedition, funded by Andrew Carnegie and the Smithsonian Institution, to collect specimens from Africa for the recently-built National Museum of Natural History. After participating in the collection of over 11,000 animals, Roosevelt toured Europe, picking up the Nobel Peace Prize he was awarded in 1906, and returned home aboard the SS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, arriving in New York on June 18, 1910. The luxury ocean liner was fitted with a darkroom, used by Roosevelt's 19-year-old son Kermit, who accompanied his father on the trip; the on-board darkroom was likely used to develop the photographic print in this lot.
