  • Notes:
Although President Roosevelt had begun preserving public lands before this, his three-day exploration of Yosemite in 1903 can only have reinvigorated the nature-loving president to continue the effort that eventually resulted in the protection of over 230 million acres of public land containing five national parks and 18 national monuments.

Conde Hamlin (1861-1943) managed a number of newspapers over the course of his career, including St. Paul Pioneer Press, the New York Tribune, and the Albany Evening News.
