one with 12 holograph words inserted, mostly concerning political appointments. Each 1 or ½ page, 4to, White House stationery, with integral blank; horizontal fold. Each with the original envelope

[Cove Neck], 4 February 1916. Washington or Oyster Bay, 14 March 1903; 28 March 1904; 4 September 1906; 13 June 1908.

  • Notes: 28 March 1904: ". . . I do not know whether I can do anything for the marshals' bill, but I shall try.
    "Do tell [William] Sloan Simpson [(1876-1946), member of Roosevelt's Rough Rider regiment] that nothing could gratify me more than having him as a delegate [to the 1904 Republican National Convention]. . . ."

    4 September 1906: ". . . I have called the attention of the Post Office Department to the failure of the [TX Governor nominee E.H.R.] Green organization and to the conduct of the Denison [TX] postmaster. . . .
    . . . I shall write to Secretary [of the Treasury Leslie Mortier] Shaw at once and ask him if he can not go down to Texas."

    13 June 1908: "Mr. E[dward] G[uy] Le Stourgeon [(1878-1958)] . . . . was a member of my Regiment [of Rough Riders], is a very good man, and I shall be pleased if you can consistently endorse him to Commissioner Capers. . . ."

    With--Letter Signed, to Jeter Connelly Pritchard ("My dear Judge Pritchard"), introducing Cecil A. Lyon and characterizing him as "the salt of the earth." 1 page, small 4to, "Sagamore Hill" stationery, with integral blank; horizontal fold. [Cove Neck], 4 February 1916.
