Engraved India proof title-page, 4 India proof viewson 2 sheets, 14 engraved views on 7 sheets, double-page engraved hand-colored folding map by HOOKER. 5 (of 8) parts in one, with the original wrappers bound in. 4to, modern cloth; moderate to heavy foxing affecting most plates, one plate torn, map separated at fold. Howes F64; Stokes III: page 599. E1,500/2,500 Stokes locates only 5 known complete sets, this set comprising the first 5 parts. The editor's note at the end of the fifth part indicates that ten would bepublished, but only 8 were completed. Fay was an associate editor of the New York Mirror, and although the title states that the plates areexecuted by Dakin, the architect, most were done by Alexander Dick. A limited number of these plates, also known as the Peabody views after the publisher, were sold as mounted India proofs at twice the cost to the subscriber (6 shillings).
