THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN Cie. FRANCAISE. 1895.
31x23 inches.
Condition A-: vertical and horizontal folds; minor restoration in top margin. Trimmed to image.
Depicting such a simple and charming domestic scene like this was not at all difficult for Steinlen, in this case specifically, as he has depicted his wife sipping tea and his daughter drinking cocoa under the scrutiny of the family cat. This variant originally appeared with brown borders, bearing the title "Chocolats / Thes Cie. Francaise," which have been cut off of this poster. The image is said to have directly influenced the art of American posterist Edward Penfield, whose 1897 Poster Calender "vividly recalled Steinlen's illustration" (Cate & Gill p. 132). Crauzat p. 135, Bargiel & Zagrodski p. 42, Maitres pl. 170 (var).
