THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN [LA MATERNELLE.] 1920.
35x44 inches. H. Chachoin.
Condition A: minor creases in margins.
In 1904 Steinlen illustrated Leon Frapie's novel, La Maternelle, which was a huge success, and went on to be adapted for the theatre in 1920. To represent "The Nursery School," Steinlen depicts a flood of children. They are the same charmingly irresistible, orphaned, waifish, destitute children he had been drawing for his whole career and which appeared in countless magazine illustrations and other posters. Two versions of this poster exist, one with a light background and red lettering and one with a dark background and yellow lettering; this is the latter version before text. Bargiel / Zagrodski 72 a3
