An exceptional group of mid-century American graphic design, promoting advertising in the New York City subway system. Artist include E. McKnight Kauffer, Paul Rand, Lester Beall, Herbert Bayer, Erik Nitsche, Joseph Binder, Sascha Maurer, Otis Shepard and Lucian Bernhard. This is a mixture of two incomplete sets: 7 of 12 reproductions of the posters in the series that were actually issued (see previous lot), and 41 of 48 subway car cards (both black and white and color versions of the same images.) Each card has the artist's bio on the back and a factoid about advertising on the subway. Included are two identical cards explaining the series; these miniature posters were sent to prospective advertisers on a weekly a basis to "reveal in a new light the almost unlimited possibilities of this medium."
