Thomas Cooper (1517?-1594)

Thesaurus Linguae Romanae & Britannicae

London: Bynneman, 1584.
Folio, title page has device with a woodcut featuring an upright chained bear; line 12 of title ends: "cogni-"; lacking first and last blanks; bound in full modern calf, occasional stains, a few blank margins torn; 12 x 8 in.

STC 5689; ESTC S121950.

Cooper's important dictionary-esque thesaurus served as a bridge for English speakers to the pervasive Neo-Latin that surrounded them. It was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth and Shakespeare. Scholars have determined by statistical analysis of the Bard's word choices that he must have employed a copy.
