  • Notes: This rare study of Whitman (1819-1892) is believed to be by Thomas Eakins, who painted his portrait that same year. The painting is in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Philadelphia. An oil sketch of the poet, also by Eakins, is housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
