Thomas Wilmer Dewing was an artist originally from Boston who was associated with the American Impressionists and the Tonalists. In 1881, Dewing settled in New York where he taught at the Art Students League until 1888. Dewing was a founding member of the Ten American Painters in 1898 along with John Henry Twachtman, J. Alden Weir, and Childe Hassam and was a member of the Society of Landscape Painters and the National Academy of Design.

Corinne Boyd Dillon (1885-1965) was born in Louisville, Kentucky, but by the turn of the century was living in New York with her parents. She began her art education early; at fifteen she entered C.V. Sanborn's portraiture class and attended Cooper Union. She soon started her career as an illustrator. Dillon continued her education in Paris, where she lived for four years. Upon returning to New York's Greenwich Village, she continued working as an illustrator for children's books and magazines.
