In 1939, Thurber had publicly supported the Communist-backed forces fighting Francisco Franco in Spain, together with many other intellectuals of the time who recognized the danger of Fascism. Because of this, despite his many published statements criticizing Communist ideology, the FBI maintained a file on Thurber from 1939 through the 1950s.
