TILDEN, WILLIAM TATEM ("BIG BILL"). Autograph Letter Signed, "Bill," to his friend Art Anderson ("Boy Dear") in the Army at Fort Ord, recounting his recent tennis exploits, "Today I played Frank Parker a set which he won 6-4. We were 4-all & 15-30 to me but he was just too darned good but I am playing well," discussing future plans, and reporting on the state of Anderson's family. 2 pages, 4to, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet, ruled paper. With the original envelope. Hollywood, 29 March 1951 [from postmark]

  • Notes: ". . . I am really getting set to try to play well for you on this tour so I can keep going & make lots of money for us when you get out--by then I hope to be in a position so we can do lots of nice things together all over the world. . . ."
Tilden (1893-1953) was once considered the greatest tennis player of all time. A recent article by Ron Borges describes him thus: "Of all his remarkable feats none can surpass this: In 1950, during an era of closed minds, the Red scare and sexual conservatism, Big Bill Tilden was overwhelmingly voted the greatest tennis player of the first half of the 20th century in an Associated Press poll only six weeks after being released from prison for the second time on a conviction of having fondled and made unwanted advances to a teenage boy."
