(TITANIC.) Signatures of the Titanic's 4 surviving officers, collected aboard the Carpathia.

(TITANIC.) Signatures of the Titanic's 4 surviving officers, collected aboard the Carpathia. Two leaves of printed stationery, each about 8 1/2 x 5 inches, with autographs on three sides and the fourth blank; minor toning, punch holes on the first leaf, the second leaf cropped along one side with loss of perhaps a half-inch of text on verso, light ink bleed-through. [Aboard the RMS Carpathia, circa 15-18 April 1912]

  • Notes: Included are the signatures and addresses of the Titanic''s four surviving officers: 2nd Officer Charles Herbert Lightoller, 3rd Officer Herbert John Pitman, 4th Officer Joseph Groves Boxhall, and 5th Officer Harold Godfrey Lowe. The ship''s captain, chief officer, 1st officer and 6th officer all perished in the wreck. These signatures were collected by Dr. Frank H. Blackmarr, a passenger aboard the RMS Carpathia, which rescued all four officers.
On verso of the second leaf are another signature and inscription, from a surviving Titanic passenger: "Picture of little boy & officer for Dr. Washington Dodge, care N. Vidaver, 116 Nassau, New York." Below are Blackmarr''s partially cropped notes based on his interviews with survivors: "think drove keel and . . . struck starboard bow . . . iceberg went by . . . feet from water . . . 3rd officer who took . . . crashing as though whole . . . crushed in." Provenance: Removed from Blackmarr''s scrapbook, which was sold in 1998 by Gunning''s Auctions of Elgin, IL to the consignor; exhibited at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum''s exhibit, ''Fire & Ice: Hindenburg and Titanic,'' 2012-2014.
