- Notes: "... We have been much distressed to hear by your last letters to [first lady Elizabeth Monroe] & Mr. Hay that Hortense's fever had returned. We fear the greatest anxiety on her account, but hope that the change in the weather will soon restore her. Still you must not move in a hurry for after her long sickness she cannot bear fatigue, & besides the city is not yet healthy. Your mother's health is I think rather improved..."
