  • Notes: Floyd's service as Secretary of War under President Buchanan became controversial at the time of secession, when Northern Congressmen accused Floyd of diverting U. S. troops to far away posts and sending excess arms and materials to Southern forts. He was commissioned a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army on 23 May 1861 and after 2 years of command and several battles he retired from service and died in August 1863.
