Notes: "Though I am taking the medicine of silence, my regimen is not so absolute that I cannot allow myself a few conversations. I will be much charmed to receive Dr. Merivale. Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French writer and statesman, author of Democracy in America, and minister of foreign affairs in 1849.
