TODD WEBB (1905-2000)
Smallwood St., Baltimore, MD * Paterson, N.J. Together, 2 silver prints, the images measuring 6¼x8¼ and 6 1/8x4½ inches (15.9x21 and 15.5x11.4 cm.), the mounts 14x11 inches (35.6x27.9 cm.), each with Webb's signature (twice), title, and date in ink on mount verso. 1948 & 1946
WITH--Todd Webb. Mexico, Patzcuaro, the market has a livestock section. Silver print, the image measuring 7½x9½ inches (19.1x24.1 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Webb's stamp, a Photo Researchers, Inc. label, and the title in ink, on verso. 1969

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: Webb's pair of photographs is in nearly excellent condition. Both prints display exquisite details and a rich range of mid-tones.

Upon close inspection in strong, raking light, we can notice a few soft and minor surface impressions listed below. However, they are almost imperceptible in strong raking light being obscured by the graphic qualities of the images. Otherwise, the prints are clean and neat.

Print 1 (window - Paterson, N.J): in the lower right quadrant, three faint and tiny linear impressions. Hardly noticeable. A small chip with loss at the very far lower right edge. The original mount shows some warming, more pronounced on the left side. Otherwise, clean and neat as well as its verso.

Print 2 (façade - Smallwood St., Baltimore, MD): three soft tiny surface impressions in the center of the left quadrant. Hardly visible in strong raking light. Edges clean and neat. A narrow band of warming around the mount. Otherwise, mount clean and neat, as well as its verso.

The third image of the Mexican market also displays crisp details and a rich range of mid-tones. Under examination in strong raking light, the print evidences scattered soft linear creases, which are primarily confined to the edges of the image area, and in the narrow white margins. The most visible one is a small diagonal crease with a break in the emulsion at the lower right corner, as visible on our online catalog. Also, a cluster of thin creases in the upper right quadrant (in the shade) and obscured by the graphic qualities of the print. The verso is clean.
