TÖPFFER, RUDOLPHE. Essai de Physiognomonie.

TÖPFFER, RUDOLPHE. Essai de Physiognomonie. Illustrated by Töpffer with printed reproduction of his handwriting. Thin 4to, later 1/4 cloth over marbled boards; original blue wrappers bound in; scattered light foxing throughout. Ex-collection art critic Meyer Schapiro, with his signature on endpaper of each volume. Geneva, 1845

  • Notes: with--An early facsimile in a slightly larger format. Considered his major theoretical piece, Essai explores the study of human expression and how, through using archetypes, the artist can convey human qualities on paper. He explains that simple lines can reduce any form to its bare essentials, drawing out and accentuating its most important aspects and states how a person's or a fictional character's personality or even their soul can be laid bare through simplification and caricature.
