Tom Purvis, who worked prominently and extensively for Britain's London & North Eastern Railway, went on to design several posters for Canadian Pacific. In England his posters ran the gamut from traditional landscapes to people engaged in a variety of activities. His use of "flat primary colors and the elimination of detail" (Railway p. 135) was his graphic calling card and what he is most appreciated and best remembered for. In the style of the Beggarstaff Brothers "he formed his figures solely from masses of color, without outline" (Weill p. 228). His designs are all notable for their simple, powerful graphics, and this image differs from some of Purvis's earlier English work in that it contains the infusion of more vitality and nuance into the image. Canadian Pacific 73 (var).
