TORREY, JESSIE. A Portraiture of Domestic Slavery in The United States, with Selections on the Practicability of Restoring the Moral Rights of the Slave without impairing the Legal Privileges of the Possession, And A Project of A Colonial Asylum for Free Persons of Colour. Including Memoirs of Facts on the Interior Traf fic in Slaves, and on Kidnapping. Philadelphia: Published by the Author, 1817 E350/500 FIRST EDITION. Important book, dedicated "To the candid consideration of Philanthropists, Legislators, and Possessors of Slaves ." While Torrey demon-strated slavery's cruelties he was also aware of the enormous investment plantation owners had in their slaves; thus his attempt to find a way to free slaves "without impairing the legal priviledges of the owner." Engravings are quite strik-ing. Not in Schomburg Collection; Blockson Collection 9856; Sabin 96290.
