(TRAVEL.) Manuscript diary kept during the inaugural University World Cruise.

(TRAVEL.) Manuscript diary kept during the inaugural University World Cruise. Approximately 200 pages on loose sheets, 7 x 4 inches, adhesive stain on first sheet, bottom half of 16 March page torn off, condition generally excellent; long entries for almost every day except October 1926. Vp, 18 September 1926 to 2 May 1927

  • Notes: The University World Cruise sent 500 college students on a steamship tour of the world aboard the S.S. Ryndam for the 1926-27 academic year. It was the precursor of today's Semester at Sea and other similar programs. This journal of the tour was kept by an unidentified student (possibly from Hastings, PA), and includes visits to Cuba, Japan, China, India, Egypt, and various stops in Europe. The students as a group were famously ill-behaved, reflected in this 6 December 1926 entry in Siam: "Fine new station used by royalty only, until we defiled it." On 27 September 1926 in Cuba: "Old darkey woman gayly dressed and smoking pipes. Dr. Whitney would not pay 10 cents for the privilege of photographing her, sorry I did not try my hand. . . . Crew had (some of them) a good time getting booze, also some of students." This entry from 21 February 1927 was later crossed out: "Shook hands with Mussolini in Chigi Palace." with--a printed folio volume, "Photographs of the First University World Cruise" by Walter C. Harris, 1927; and two photographs.
