  • Notes: Journal of travels with the great Methodist Great Awakening evangelist George Whitefield. Seward served as Whitefield's publicist and financial backer. In several places, Seward discusses Whitefield's work among the enslaved population: "Our brother invited the poor Negroes to touch Jesus Christ by Faith, whereby the would gain Freedom from the Slavery of Sin and Satan" (page 7); "Mr. Whitefield proposes to give Orders for building the Negroe School on the purchased Land before he leaves the Province" (page 11).

Not long after publishing this account, Seward began preaching on his own in Great Britain. He was stoned to death by an angry mob in Wales in October, becoming the first Methodist martyr. Clark, Old South I:147; Evans 4598; Howes S307 ("aa"); Sabin 79495. None traced at auction since 1996.
