TRUMAN, HARRY S. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to newspaper editor Emil Hurja,

"OPTIMISM ABOUT STATEHOOD FOR ALASKA AND HAWAII IS NOT JUSTIFIED" TRUMAN, HARRY S. Typed Letter Signed, as President, to newspaper editor Emil Hurja, explaining that he has done all he can to promote statehood for Alaska and Hawaii, remarking that statehood is unlikely for these territories, and acknowledging his interest in the Truman administration's efforts. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery, with integral blank; faint marginal discoloration from prior matting, horizontal fold. (SFC) Washington, 10 April 1952

". . . I am very much afraid that your optimism about statehood for Alaska and Hawaii is not justified and I am sorry to say that. Both of these territories should be states. I've done everything I can to accomplish that purpose but it looks very much as if we are not going to succeed. . . ."
Dwight D. Eisenhower followed Truman into the presidency in 1953; during his second term, Alaska became the 49th state in January of 1959, and Hawaii was admitted to the union in August of the same year.
