TSENG KWONG CHI (1950-1990) London.

TSENG KWONG CHI (1950-1990)
London. Silver print, the image measuring 15 inches (38.1 cm.) square, the sheet 20x16 inches (50.8x40.6 cm.), with Muna Tseng's signature, title, dates, and edition notation 2/25 in ink, and the Estate of Tseng Kwong Chi and the Muna Tseng Dance Projects Inc. stamps on verso. 1983; printed 2002

Tseng comments provocatively on his subversive and engaging work (artist's website, tsengkwongchi.com): "My mirrored glasses give the picture a neutral impact and a surrealistic quality I'm looking for. I am an inquisitive traveler, a witness of my time, and an ambiguous ambassador … My photographs are social studies and social comments on Western society and its relationship with the East. [I pose] as a Chinese tourist in front of monuments of Europe, America and elsewhere."

  • Condition: Tseng Kwong Chi's self-portrait in front of the Tower Bridge is in excellent condition. The print lush and rich, with densely packed detail and tonal variety.

Under close examination and raking light, the surface of the print doesn't evidence any imperfection.

Its margins and recto are also bright and clean.

A well-known image of his East Meets West (also known as Expeditionary Self-Portrait Series) in which the artist photographed himself in front of popular tourist sites co-opting the identity of a Chinese government official or dignitary. Part clichéd tourist shot, part conceptual performance, Tseng's images subversively explore notions of cultural identity.
