With its prominent theme of character duality and deep psychological insight, it is considered one of the first great works of modern Russian literature. It strongly influenced Tolstoy and Dostoevsky and, as the first Russian work to gain prominence in the Western world, was championed by Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, and Henry James.
