INSCRIBED TO HIS FIRST "ANGEL-FISH" TWAIN, MARK. Christian Science. With Notes Containing Corrections To Date. 8vo, publisher''s gilt-stamped bright red cloth, bottom front tip slightly bumped; chemise and 1/4 morocco slipcase. A fine, bright copy. BAL 3497. New York & London: Harper & Brothers, 1907
-
Notes: fine copy inscribed to his first "angel-fish" dorothy butes: "For Dorothy, with the affectionate regards of The Author, April / 07." The inscription is identical to one in another of Twain''s books given to Butes on 22 April 1907. Pinned to the front flyleaf is an unsigned typed note (likely from Butes) reading: "My Dear Sir: --Your Christian Science really is `A Peach from Pier 70.'' Yours Truly, Never Mind Who." In addition, Twain has made one correction to the text on page 106, adding the words "Literary Oleomargarine."
with--an autograph quotation signed by twain to butes: "Consider well the proportions of things: it is better to be a young junebug than an old bird of paradise." With a postscript Signed with initials, "You owe me a visit, Dorothy dear. Come, pay up & save your character!" 1/2 page, single oblong small 4to sheet, tissue paper; some foxing, folds. [Stormfield], 25 December 1908.
Upon the death of his wife and absence of his grown children, Twain longed for his "grandpa stage of life" but lacked his own grandchildren. Upon meeting Dorothy Butes, a 14-year old girl who wished to meet the great man, he began to form a group of surrogate granddaughters. He named them his Angel-Fish after a visit to the Bermuda aquarium where the angel-fish suggested youth and feminine beauty to him. Few letters or inscribed books to the girls appear at auction. - Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries'' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
