TWAIN, MARK. Autograph Letter Signed, "S.L. Clemens," to "Dear Mr. McClure,"

"THE WAY TO JUST AND RATIONAL COPYRIGHT LAW" TWAIN, MARK. Autograph Letter Signed, "S.L. Clemens," to "Dear Mr. McClure," concerning his unpublished Socratic dialogue, "The Great Republic's Peanut Stand," arguing for reforms in copyright law. 3 pages, 8vo, written on two separate sheets, mourning stationery; folds with one touching extreme top of "C" in signature. "Kaltenleutgeben (near) Vienna," 26 June 1898

  • Notes: ". . . I'm finishing an article, 'The Great Republic's Peanut Stand,' and you can bid on that if you want to pay a super-scandalously high price for it. The subject is copyright (which is up again in the English Parliament.) In all seriousness, I regard this as the only intelligent article which has ever been written upon the subject which has not been chiefly characterized by ignorance and stupidity; and finally, as the only one which has pointed the way to just and rational copyright law. . . .
"I estimate that it will make 8 (maybe 9) pages of your magazine. I don't charge by words, but by magazine page. For I (after Socrates) have re-instituted the plan of insuring interest in a grave subject by discussing it in the form of a dialogue--brief questions, brief answers; a form which livens up the look of the page, and also keeps the topic alive. I shall patent it and kill imitations. Not many people can write effective dialogue--and when they can, they must charge . . . ."
For a number of years, Twain had been immersed in an effort to promote a uniform copyright law, both in the United States and abroad. In 1906, Twain testified before Congress in an attempt to extend copyright protection, but the extension he craved was not enacted until the Copyright Act of 1976.
