TWAIN, MARK. Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, personal notes, or fragment of a letter, concerning his lawyer and several ongoing lawsuit

"SUE THE COUNTESS FOR 50,000 LIRE" TWAIN, MARK. Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, personal notes, or fragment of a letter, concerning his lawyer and several ongoing lawsuits, mostly concerning a dispute with the Countess [Massiglia]. 2 pages, 8vo, written on one side of each sheet; matted and framed. Np, [circa 1904]

  • Notes: ". . . The Countess wants the siege against her raised, & says that if I leave this house its value is damaged. I am not going to stay here, with her in the vicinity. . . . [She is not] to carry the key of my W.C.'s any longer. Nor to carry any key usable on the estate. Nor keep a single arrival in the private grounds of the estate, nor in the stable now occupied by her. And I must have that stable--all of it."
The lawsuits mentioned are probably those he brought, or backed on behalf of others, against Countess Massiglia, the landlady of the villa near Florence where he moved with his family in 1903 hoping the climate would help his ailing wife.
