Signed and Inscribed by Twain on the front free endpaper, in pencil, "SLClemens / Hartford 1885," with 4 brief marginal holograph annotations, in pencil. Includes printed label on front pastedown, signed by Twain's literary executor Albert Bigelow Paine, indicating that the volume is from Twain's library and that it was sold by Anderson in February of 1911 [lot 37]. 8vo, publisher's cloth, edges rubbed, boards bowed, spine ends chipped; minor smudging to signature. Boston, 1882; inscription: Hartford, 1885

  • Notes: The annotations: "Neat, but not true," beside Bent's statement, attributed to the Countess of Blessington, that men can pity the wrongs inflicted by other men on women, but never those which they themselves inflict, p. 64.
    "This is the man whose books blew out a growing light & put fetters & manacles upon the limbs of modern progress," beside Bent's statement, attrributed to Walter Scott, that he would wish nothing of his writing blotted out upon his death, p. 66.
    "To a borous[?] poet who asked 'Have you seen my Descent into Hell?' Jerrold said, 'No, but I'd like to,'" beside quotations attributed to Douglas Jerrold, p. 289.
    "[A]n odd 'compliment' [stocks] could be expected to fall 47 hours later," beside Bent's account of an exchange between Talleyrand and Napoleon, p. 518.
