TWAIN, MARK
The Suppressed Chapter of "Life on the Mississippi." 8vo, self-wrappers; one small closed tear along the spine fold. Np, nd [circa 1910] FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 250 NUMBERED COPIES. Because of its virulent attack on the double standard of the Southern aristocracy and its codes of honor, etc., versus the cruelty and barbarism of slavery, the publisher felt that Life on the Mississippi would not sell in the South. Thus the chapter was removed before publication. The present limited edition constitutes its first printing.
