Two binders of Madonna fan letters from the early 1990s.

Two binders containing approximately 160 letters and postcards (many still in their original stamped envelopes), 25 photographs, and 5 works of original Madonna fan art; condition generally strong, front hinge split on one binder.

The letters are all from 1990 to 1993, the era of the Blond Ambition tour, Erotica album, and Truth or Dare documentary. Most of the letters are addressed to "Like a Fan Club" or the Official Madonna Fan Club in West Hollywood, CA; some were addressed to Sire Records or Warner Records and apparently forwarded. A few are addressed directly to Madonna, or "Mrs. Madonna Ciccione," or "Lady Madonna."

The majority of the letters are from outside the United States, from fans as far away as Indonesia, the Soviet Union, Iran, Ethiopia, Chile, Israel and throughout Europe, usually in broken English but sometimes in their own languages. Many of the letters express the sincere hope of beginning a personal friendship with the mega-star. For example, one 11-year-old girl writes "Perhaps this season you could come to visit my school in Pennsylvania. . . . You are always welcome to stay at my house. . . . I know all your dances to your 1990 Ambition Tour. I watch it and dance to it every day." Many fans enclosed photographs of themselves. At least one letter had a weightier object than expressing love of Madonna's music: a documentary film producer sought funding for a film about AIDS. These albums are a touchingly human testament to the global spread of American pop culture.
Binders approximately 11 1/2 x 10 in. (29.2 x 25.4 cm.)
