  • Notes: scarce issues of the short-lived spanish ultraist journal. Launched in Madrid in 1919 by the poet Guillermo de Torre, the Ultraism movement in Spanish and Spanish American poetry after World War I was characterized by a tendency to use free verse, complicated metrical innovations, and evocative imagery and symbolism in lieu of traditional form and content. The great Argentine writer Borges introduced Ultraism to South American in 1921 and published numerous poems within its pages and in that of the other major Ultraist avant-garde periodical, Grecia (1919–20). The movement soon attracted a coterie of such avant garde writers as Chileans Pablo Neruda and Vicente Huidobro and the Mexican poets Jaime Torres Bodet and Carlos Pellicer. Although Ultraism had subsided by 1923, the sociopolitical overtones of much of their writing flowered into the Marxist poetry of the following decade and was later revived by post-World War II avant-garde writers.
