UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD Portfolio containing 97 large-format news photographs depicting a host of wide-ranging

WE STARTED A JOB - LET'S FINISH IT - INVEST! UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD
Portfolio containing 97 large-format news photographs depicting a host of wide-ranging topical events during and immediately after the First World War; each with a printed caption below the photograph. With several photographs of flying vessels (including aviation stunts, seaplanes, dirigibles and the world's largest flying boat), many relating to U.S. Army and Navy War news (including maritime views of military vessels, scenes depicting European battles, relief efforts, President Wilson at the Peace Conference), the revolution in Russia, and much more. Silver prints, 13 1/4x16 1/4 inches (33.7x41.3 cm.), sheet size 19 1/2x18 inches (49.5x45.7 cm.), mounted to linen, each with a credit in the negative and accompanied by a printed headline and lengthy caption; the sheets with a 3-hole punch. Elephant folio, leatherette, soiled, covers detached; contents loose as issued. 1918-19

  • Notes: A compelling survey of images meant to stir Americans, who had adhered to a strict Isolationist policy and resisted entering the First World War, into action or service.

The mounted photographs are detachable and were, apparently, meant to be displayed in public exhibitions so as to generate American support for the Victory Loan Project. A range of images reflect the far-reaching tumult resulting from WWI--especially the decimation throughout northern Europe--as well as political unrest in post-Revolutionary "Red Russia," and Bolshevik riots in Berlin, Germany and Cleveland, Ohio. Variant views of boat planes, soldiers returning home, and pics of New York City, including a parade honoring the "Famous 69th--the Fighting Irish" are also featured.
