UNIQUE COPY PRINTED ON SILK (DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.) Tyler, Benjamin Owen. In Congress, July 4th 1776. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America. Broadside on silk, engraved by Peter Maverick, approximately 30 1/2x25 1/2 inches; very minor browning at folds; framed. [Washington, 1818]
- Notes: extraordinary impression on silk. Tyler's engraving of the Declaration was the first such decorative print based on the original manuscript. Unlike Stone's wet-transfer copy of 1823, this engraving was accomplished by hand by Tyler, a penmanship professor. The exactness of the signatures of the Signers is particularly impressive given the limitations of copying them freehand. Tyler issued the print on vellum (of which only 3 copies are known to survive) and on paper at a reduced price. We could find no references to copies printed on silk. The only other known copy on silk is located at the NYPL.
