- Notes: In 1807, Great Britain passed the act abolishing the African slave trade. The United States agreed to do its part to end the trade as well. The present act states, "That it shall not be lawful to import or bring, in any manner whatsoever, into the United States or territories thereof, from any foreign kingdom, place, or country, any negro, mulatto, or person of color, as a slave."
