Each 8 pages, 14 x 10 inches; moderate edge wear to a few issues, some unopened, a few with stab holes in the inner margins. • Notes: These folks did not invent "free love," but they did coin the phrase. The Oneida Communities were founded by John Humphrey Noyes (1811-1886), and practiced complex marriages, a eugenic breeding program, and grueling sessions of mutual criticism. At this point, they had communities in Oneida, NY and Wallingford, CT. In these pages, "Noyes expounded his doctrines of spiritualism, communism, and free love; though uneven in its editing, it was often well written and interesting"--Mott, page II:207. Most of these issues were edited by George Washington Noyes, brother of the founder, and they include community gossip and international news in addition to the many essays reflecting Oneida doctrine.
