(VERMONT.) Newspaper report of Vermont taking its name. 4 pages, 16 x 10 1/2 inches, on one folding sheet; stitch holes, a spot of dampstaining on lower inner corner, minor edge wear. (MRS) Hartford, CT, 30 June 1777

  • Notes: This issue of the Connecticut Courant and Hartford Weekly Intelligencer leads off with a front-page printing of the convention minutes of the State of Vermont. This territory had just broken off from New York and declared itself the independent republic of New Connecticut that past January, but they had since learned of another settlement using the same name on the Susquehanna River. Adding to the embarrassment, the announcement had been printed in a previous issue of the Connecticut Courant without adequate explanation. It was "resolved therefore unanimously that the said district . . . shall ever hereafter be called and known by the name of Vermont." This is followed by a list of convention delegates and a long list titled "Complaints," all directed at the government of New York.
