Small but important archive of materials related to Reconstruction, from the library of Samuel H. Vick, activist and postmaster of Wilson, North Carolina. Various items of various sizes. SHOULD BE SEEN. Vp, 1889-1901 Samuel H. Vick was appointed as postmaster by his friend Henry Cheatham. The position of postmaster in the South was a hotly contested issue, largely because of the economic mobility it provided for blacks. The salary of $1800 was considerable. This archive includes: ALS from Representative Cheatham to Vick, on House of Representatives letterhead. 24 April 1889 * Autograph Postcard from Cheatham to Vick with good content * ALS from George H. White to Vick (White was the last former slave to serve in Congress) * Photographs of White and Cheatham * ALS from orator Rev. J. C.
