VINCENT SMITH (1929 - 2003)
Dawn.

Oil and sand on masonite board, 1966. 762x610 mm; 30x24 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right

Provenance: private collection, New York; thence by descent, private collection, Connecticut. With a submssion label to the 1968 143rd Annual Exhibition, National Academy of Design, New York, attached to the frame back, submitted by Larcada Gallery, New York.

This colorful but poignant scene is an excellent example of an early painting by Vincent Smith. Smith began to add sand and then collage in his paintings in the late 1960s. Larcada Gallery began to represent Vincent Smith in 1967 with a solo exhibition - the first of five solo exhibitions Smith had with Larcada through the 1970s.
