  • Notes: an unusual george washington and robert e. lee slave-related item. Upon his death, Washington manumitted his slaves, with the exception of those owned by Martha Washington as part of her dowry. Those slaves were bequeathed to her son George W. P. Custis. Upon his death in 1857, his property was given to his daughter Mary Anna Randolph Lee -- the wife of Robert E. Lee -- but the slaves manumitted. This printing of an appellant argument concerns a challenge to the manumissions stipulated in the will, discussing the argument that they are part of the property bequeathed to Lee.
