VOIGTEL, NICOLAUS. Vermehrte Geometria Subterranea, oder Marckscheide-Kunst. 10 double-page engraved plates (first shaved along outer edge, and with minor stain in center crease). [10], 228 pages, including engraved additional title showing surveyors with instruments. Eisleben: Gottfried Andreas Leg for Johann Gottfried Rüdel, 1714

  • Notes: Enlarged edition of the first scientific German treatise on mine surveying, originally published in 1686 as Geometria subterranea. Through its systematic application of trigonometry, Voigtel's work represented a significant advance over earlier writings on the subject by Georg Agricola and Erasmus Reinhold. In addition to giving detailed explanations of the use of a variety of surveying instruments, the book covers decimal arithmetic, geometry, and sine tables; mining terminology; water supply systems; and the resolution of boundary disputes by the accurate plotting of surface boundaries underground. ADB XL, 212; Hoover 389 (1713 edition).
