VORAGINE, JACOBUS DE. [The Golden Legend.] English translation by William Caxton. 140 (of 270) leaves, mostly bound out of order. Black letter. Folio, 305x230 mm, 19th-century 1/4 sheep, covers detached, lacks backstrip; contents variously soiled and dampstained, approximately a third of the leaves imperfect, with marginal tears or repairs causing text loss. sold as is. [London]: (Julian Notary, 1503)

  • Notes: Includes 17 leaves (2 of them imperfect) from the section of Old Testament stories at the beginning, sometimes lacking because of the early prohibition against translating the Bible into English. The 1483 original edition of Caxton's translation was the first printed book to contain portions of the Bible in English.
