W. EUGENE SMITH (1918-1978) Death of Gus-Gus.

W. EUGENE SMITH (1918-1978)
Death of Gus-Gus. Silver print, the image measuring 6¾x8 5/8 inches (17.1x21.9 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, the mat 11x14 inches (27.9x35.6 cm.), with Smith's signature in a stylus on print recto, provenance notations in pencil on print verso, and his copyright stamp on mat verso. 1953; printed circa 1970

  • Condition: Eugene Smith's photograph of his daughter with her dead rat is nearly in excellent condition. The print is textural and contrasty, with bright highlights.

Under close examination and raking light, the surface of the print doesn't evidence any imperfection except for a tiny spot of unknown residue in the upper right quadrant. It is extremely discreet and doesn't disturb the viewing of the image at all.

The margins and the verso are clean with the notation in pencil "good for sale" and signed by Smith's studio assistant Leslie Teichholz on verso.

Literature: W. Eugene Smith. An Aperture Monograph, (Aperture, Inc., New York, 1969)
