W.W. Denslow (1856-1915), illus. & Thomas H. Russell

Pictures from the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Chicago: George W. Ogilvie, n.d. [i.e. 1903].
First and only edition, octavo; illustrated with 22 full-color plates by Denslow; bound in cloth-backed stiff pictorial wrappers (offsetting from plates, pp. 22-24 detached but present, title starting, couple spots, handful minor stains; creases, light edge wear, just fraying at spine ends); 8 ¼ x 6 ½ in.

This scarce publication is comprised of 22 of the 24 plates originally produced for George M. Hill's first edition of Wonderful Wizard. When Hill went bankrupt in 1902, they sold off most of their stock, largely made up of Baum and Denslow items. George W. Ogilvie & Co. purchased the lot of Denslow's WW plates and subsequently published this booklet under the absurd title, "Adventures of the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Little Girl," by a Thos. H. Russell. Bienvenue and Schmidt believe that the full run of these booklets, approximated at just over 1,000 copies, were handed out as souvenirs to audience members who attended Broadway's Majestic Theater for the 125th performance of The Wizard of Oz in mid-1903.

Bienvenue and Schmidt pp. 145-146.

From the Michael Charles Collection of L. Frank Baum and Oz books.
