WAGNER, RICHARD. Autograph Letter Signed, to August Röckel, in German, reporting having written to [Ferdinand] Präger,

WAGNER, RICHARD. Autograph Letter Signed, to August Röckel, in German, reporting having written to [Ferdinand] Präger, promising to report on the result, wishing success to his daughter, and hoping to meet again soon. 1 page, 8vo; faint scattered foxing, folds, remnants of hinging at upper edge verso, remnants of mounting along right edge verso. Zürich, 8 January 1855

"Following your advice, I immediately wrote to Präger. I will let you know what happens next. I am deeply touched that you take such an interest in me and my fortunes and I feel very obliged to you.
"Best of luck to your dear daughter's success. If I can be of any help I would be most happy to assist. . . ."
Ferdinand Christian Wilhelm Präger (1815-1891) was a composer, musician, teacher and author, having written a controversial biography of Richard Wagner in English entitled Wagner As I Knew Him (1892). 1855 was a pivotal year in Wagner's career, for it was in March of that year that his music was first exposed to the English-speaking world. Präger, who had written to the secretary of London's Philharmonic Society about inviting Wagner to lead the orchestra that season, describes in his biography the concert Wagner conducted on March 25--which included a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony and a selection from his own Lohengrin: "[T]he applause was so boisterous, and the demands of the audience so emphatic, that a repetition was at once given."
