  • Notes: Tannhäuser was first performed in 1845, but after a major revision, the work had its Paris premiere on March 13, 1861. Writing from Paris in September of 1860, Wagner wrote a long letter to art historian Frédéric Villot discussing Tannhäuser in the hope of preparing the French public for its reception.
