WALKER, DAVID. Walker's Appeal No. 2

WALKER, DAVID. Walker's Appeal No. 2 [in] The Liberator, Volume 1, Number 20. Bi-folium, folded vertically and horizontally with a tiny pinhole at the conjunction of the folds with no significant loss of text. Boston: Liberator Offices, 14 May, 1831

  • Notes: rare early issue in which the entire front page and a portion of the second page are devoted to a excerpts and a frank discussion of black radical david walker's "appeal to the colored citizens of the world." Unquestionably the most radical piece of writing to come from the pen of an African American in the United States prior to such figures as Marcus Garvey or Malcolm X, David Walker's Appeal shook American slaveholders to their core. The article is in the form of a letter to the paper addressed to Walker and quotes long passages from his Appeal. The writer of the article who signs himself signed simply as "V" obviously approves: "Well Done, David Walker. I like your spirit for it will work out the salvation of your brethren. . . ."
