Walt Disney Studios / Walt Kelly & Bob McCrea

(1913-1973) / (1911-1995)

Mickey Mouse and Pluto animation clean-up drawing pair. 1939.

Graphite on 5 hole punched Disney animation paper.
Production:
A pair of clean-up animation drawings featuring Mickey Mouse and his pal Pluto from Mickey's Surprise Party, the 1939 Nabisco advertising short which screened at the Golden Gate International Exhibition in San Francisco and the New York World's Fair.
Each image: 4 x 4 1/4 in. (10.2 x 10.8 cm.), Each sheet: 10 x 12 in. (25.4 x 30.5 cm.)

  • Provenance:
    Private collection, New York.

    Other notes:
Notably, this short marked the debut of Fred Moore's 'modern' Mickey Mouse design, which is essentially still in use today.
Each drawing has the frame number 53, indicating a perfectly matched set; both correspond to the 1 min 13 sec mark of the short, when we first meet the newly-designed Mickey sauntering up to Minnie's door with a flower bouquet in hand, Pluto by his side.

Studio documents indicate that animation for this scene was helmed by future Pogo creator Walt Kelly. Additionally, the Mickey drawing bears the initials "REM"-- most likely belonging to long-time Disney animator Bob McCrea.
  • Condition: Drawings are on untrimmed 5 hole punched Disney animation paper. While they still have great visual appeal, both drawings have mat burn in the shape of the mat opening and have several small pieces of framer's tape holding them in place.
