WALTER DEXEL (1890-1973) SPITZEN UND STOFFE / HOLZ UND BERNSTEIN. 1929.
33x23 1/4 inches, 98x59 cm. Pfannkuch, Magdeburg.
Condition A-: repaired tear at left edge, slightly into image; minor repaired tears, creases and minor abrasions at edges.
A painter, typographer, graphic designer and teacher, Dexel was appointed as the director of the Art Union in Jena, a central German university town. From 1928 until 1935, he was a lecturer at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Magdeburg. Closely associated with the Bauhaus, he became one of the most prominent practitioners of Contstructivism. Dexel's strict constructivist style "used exclusively typography and abstract geometrical markers" (Avant Garde p. 64). He eschewed pictorial imagery for the "the use of ornament based entirely on the precise geometric forms of the rectangle and the circle, and the almost exclusive use of a geometrically based sans-serif type" (Word & Image p. 56). Here, he advertises an exhibition of lace, fabrics, wood and amber in Magdeburg. MoMA 309.1937.
